The US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has announced an interest in buying its British rival AstraZeneca. The potential £63bn deal has set alarm bells ringing in parts of Whitehall amid fears that Pfizer - maker of Viagra - could seek to cut British jobs and reduce investment in research and development.

Also this week: a report by the thinktank Policy Exchange predicts that the number of people belonging to an ethnic minority will double within a generation. They assert that this will require a far more nuanced approach from political parties who have a tendency to treat ethnic minorities as a homogenous group.
And we hear from some of the "born-free generation" in South Africa as they vote for the first time. The ANC is on course to win around two-thirds of the votes – but many young people have voiced disaffection with the party still much-loved by their parents for its role in ending apartheid.
