Astonishing pictures show homes completely iced over amid sub-zero temperatures

The scene may look like something out of Narnia but locals who woke up to it found the morning anything but magical...

A perfect storm of sub-zero temperatures, gale-force winds, and 16-foot waves left Hamburg looking more like the fantasy land from classic series The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S Lewis, than a lake shore New York town.

Homes are left completely iced over.

Residents in its Hoover Beach neighbourhood woke up to the ice completely covering their doors and windows while in some cases, houses were left in darkness because of how thick the frozen water was.

Some of the homes, on the banks of Lake Erie, had ice up to three feet thick, leaving one owner being forced to chisel his way out.

"Welcome to Narnia," John Kucko tweeted with an image of the now-frozen structures.

"Two days of gale-force winds along Lake Erie have iced over many of the homes along the beach in Hamburg."

Local Ed Mis added: "I actually had to go out a secondary door and then chisel my way back into the house by breaking the ice."

Temperatures dipped below freezing last week but are only continuing to get colder.

So residents will have to get used to putting plans on ice.
