Shocking footage shows the moment two motorcyclists are sent flying by a suspected drink driver.

The head-on crash with a car shows the suspect behind the wheel before fleeing the scene without helping the pair.

The bike can be seen travelling down a street when the car suddenly comes into view.

They can be seen in the footage, which was recorded by a security camera, heading straight for the bike.

The rider tries to dodge the car but he and his passenger are hit head-on by the vehicle and sent flying into the air before landing in a heap.

The incident happened in the city of Acopiara in the north-eastern Brazilian state of Ceara, on the afternoon of December 10.

Despite the force of the collision, both motorcyclists survived and were taken to hospital with unspecified injuries.

Police said that they believed the driver of the car was drunk at the time and had then fled the scene without helping the two victims.

Authorities in the area said they had launched an investigation for culpable bodily harm suspicion of driving under the influence and failing to render assistance. during the incident.

The police said: "The case was registered at the Regional Police Station of Iguatu, a unit on duty in the region, and was later transferred to the Municipal Police Station of Acopiara, which will continue the investigations."

It is not known if any arrests had been made following the incident.
