Aston Villa Women matches against Bristol City and Chelsea postponed after player tests positive for Covid-19

Chelsea's clash with Aston Villa in the Women's Super League (WSL) is one of two matches to have been postponed after Villa confirmed a positive test for Covid-19.

In a statement released on Friday, Villa announced that a positive result had been recorded by an unnamed member of their first-team squad, who is now self-isolating in accordance with Government guidelines.

Gemma Davies' newly-promoted side - who have lost all three of their matches in 2020-21 - were due to travel to fellow winless side Bristol City on Sunday (October 11), before hosting reigning WSL champions Chelsea at the Trevor Brown Memorial Ground six days later.

However, both of those contests have now been postponed, with many of Villa's other players also isolating as a precautionary measure.

"Aston Villa Women can confirm that a member of our first-team squad has tested positive for COVID-19," Villa's statement read.

"Several other members of the squad will also enter a period of self-isolation.

"Due to these developments, we have since agreed with the FA to postpone our next two fixtures, against Bristol City (October 11th) and Chelsea (October 17th).

"Aston Villa’s main priority is the health and safety of our players, staff, and opponents."
