Aston Villa vs Everton likely to be postponed despite being pushed back amid Covid crisis

Aston Villa's home game with Everton this weekend is likely to be postponed despite being pushed back until Sunday.

Villa are in the grip of a major COVID-19 crisis after their Bodymoor Heath training ground was shut last week following a significant outbreak in their first team bubble.

It saw Villa forced to field a youth team against Liverpool in the FA Cup at home on Friday night in a 4-1 loss.

Villa's home game against Tottenham in the Premier League on Wednesday was later postponed.

Premier League chiefs instead gave Jose Mourinho's men a rearranged clash with Fulham in a fixture reshuffle at short notice.

But Villa's training ground remains closed and their players did not train again on Tuesday.

The club previously confirmed nine players and five staff had tested positive last week and were self-isolating.

But the amount of close contacts means the number of Villa personnel affected is higher.

Everton had been scheduled to go to Villa Park at 5:30pm on Saturday January 16 but the game was then pushed back until noon on Sunday January 17.

And MirrorSport understands the deferment might still not be enough for the match to take place this weekend.

It could have big repercussions for Villa's promising start to the season with Dean Smith's side in eighth in the table above Chelsea and Arsenal.

The team's next game is at Manchester City next Wednesday.

Villa CEO Christian Purslow previously described the situation as a “very nasty out-of-control coronavirus outbreak”.
