Championship Play-Off Final 2018-19
Venue: Wembley
Date: Monday, 27 May, 2019

Kick-off time: 3pm BST

Aston Villa and Derby meet in the Championship final on Bank Holiday Monday with a place in the Premier League on the line.

In one of the richest games in football, Villa bid to return to the English top flight after a three-year absence having seen off West Brom after a tense penalty shoot-out.

Derby meanwhile booked their place after a thrilling victory over Leeds United. Frank Lampard’s side trailed the Whites after a first leg home defeat but silenced Elland Road with a superb comeback before edging a 4-3 aggregate thriller.

Lampard will come up against former teammate John Terry, serving as Dean Smith’s assistant at Villa Park and the Chelsea flavour doesn’t stop there with three Blues loanees likely to start.

Monday’s winner will benefit from revenue of roughly £170m over the next three seasons.

Aston Villa vs Derby team news and predicted line-ups

Axel Tuanzebe, on loan from Manchester United, limped off in the final minutes against West Brom and was later pictured wearing strapping around his ankle.

It remains to be seen whether the 21-year-old will recover in time for what could be a perfect end to his loan spell at Villa Park.

Orjan Nyland, Thomas Carroll and Jordan Lyden are likely to remain out with long-term injuries.

Derby’s Scott Malone meanwhile will have to sit out of Monday’s final after picking up a late red card against Leeds.

That is likely to see 38-year-old Ashley Cole come in for another Wembley appearance.

Score prediction: Aston Villa 2-2 Derby (Derby win on penalties)

While Aston Villa will be considered the bookies’ favourites, Frank Lampard has proven over and over again this season he is the man for the big occasion.

West Brom joined Manchester United and Southampton among those to lose their nerve in a penalty shoot-out against the Rams – if it gets that far again in what could be another thriller – you might fear for Villa.

Head to Head history and results (h2h)

This will be the 141th meeting between these two sides. Villa hold the better record, having won 71 of those meetings while the Rams have 44 with 25 draws over the years.

While league results matter little once you get to Wembley, Villa scored seven without reply in their two meetings this term.
