Aston Villa told Newcastle United forward Allan Saint-Maximin would be a 'key addition'

Aston Villa should consider signing Newcastle United attacker Allan Saint-Maximin this summer.

That's the view of former Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie, who believes the Magpies talisman would be a 'key addition' to Dean Smith's side.

Saint-Maximin has struggled with injuries this season, and made his latest return after a groin complaint as a substitute in the draw with Tottenham last weekend.

The 24-year-old has been restricted to just 18 appearances so far, registering two goals and three assists for the Magpies.

Steve Bruce's side have struggled in his sustained absence, with a run of just two wins their last 19 league matches plunging United to the brink of the relegation zone.

In contrast, Villa have enjoyed a fine campaign in their second season back in the Premier League. Having survived on the final day last year, an unlikely push for European football was on the cards this time around until a recent poor run of form.

Saint-Maximin will likely be a man in demand if Newcastle do suffer the third relegation of the Mike Ashley era, and Hendrie believes Villa should consider a move for the former Nice forward.

Hendrie told the Transfer Tavern "He is one that I would certainly take.

"He's got that Premier League credibility. We've seen what he can do.

"He's got that attack rate, he's got flair you know, all sorts. He could be a key addition to a Villa side that I feel - that’s where they've really lacked, in wide areas.

"I touched on Trezeguet before, I think he'd certainly come into the side. He reminds me of certain elements of [Bertrand] Traore, but he's possibly got that little bit more element of pace going forward and he's very direct, so he'd be someone I'd certainly be looking at."
