Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz slams Manchester United penalty decision

Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz has slammed the decision to award Manchester United a second-half penalty in their win on New Year's Day.

United moved level on points with Liverpool in the Premier League after a hard-fought 2-1 win at Old Trafford.

Anthony Martial had given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side the lead before half-time before Bertrand Traore levelled things up after the break.

However, the visitors were only level for a matter of minutes as Bruno Fernandes resorted United's lead from the penalty spot following a foul from Luiz on Paul Pogba.

After a VAR check referee Michael Oliver awarded the spot-kick with a decision which left Brazilian midfielder Luiz outraged.

“I see this video, I can’t believe it was a penalty," he wrote on Twitter. "I always support fairer football, with fewer mistakes, but then I stop and see these types of moves.

“If we have VAR to help, LET’S start using it CORRECTLY, these mistakes can define the future of clubs!”

Luiz's view was shared by Villa manager Dean Smith who feels the decision to award the penalty should have been overturned.

"I thought it was a penalty at the time, but I looked at it after the game and saw he tripped himself," he told Sky Sports. "I don't see why Michael (Oliver) couldn't have looked at it.

"That's what VAR is for isn't it? He's tripped himself up. There's margins in football. I've seen it again, and I don't think it's a penalty."
