Aston Villa set to seal £8.5million Ally Samatta transfer from Belgian side Genk

Genk striker Ally Samatta is set to join Aston Villa in an £8.5million deal.

The forward scored against Liverpool in the Champions League this season.

Samatta has scored 76 goals in 191 games for the Belgian side during his time at the Luminus Arena.

He has also bagged 20 times for Tanzania, in 56 matches, and had been linked with a switch to Crystal Palace - before the Eagles completed the loan signing of Cenk Tosun.

The 27 year-old will be tasked with leading the attack for Dean Smith’s relegation-threatened side, following the injury that ended £22million summer signing Wesley’s campaign.

The Brazilian suffered a cruciate knee injury in the game against Burnley on New Year’s Day.

Samatta, who has scored 10 times in 28 games this term, trained with his current club on Thursday morning, but is now expected to close a move to Villa Park.

He will need a work permit, but that shouldn't be an issue given his international pedigree.

However, that will mean he won't be available on Saturday against Brighton, but could, depending on time constraints, be ready for the midweek home clash with Brighton.

Villa have been scouring Europe for a replacement for Wesley, and were offered the services of veteran ex-Arsenal and Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

Jonathan Kodjia, the club’s only other senior striker, could leave this month having failed to convince Smith that he can lead the line in the Premier League.

The Villans boss preferred Anwar El Ghazi in attack during the 6-1 thrashing by Manchester City at the weekend.

Villa spent more than £100million in the summer, but sit 18th in the Premier League table, having taken just 21 points from 22 matches.

Samatta is set to become their third arrival in 2020, after the loan signings of Danny Drinkwater and Pepe Reina.
