Aston Villa set to avoid points deduction in Premier League as FFP debate rumbles on following Middlesbrough reportedly suing Derby County over Pride Park sale

Aston Villa are set to avoid a points deduction in their first season back in the Premier League

Championship clubs had called on the Premier League to enforce a punishment on Villa should they have been found in breach of profit and sustainability rules.

In March, an independent panel concluded that Birmingham City should be given a nine-point deduction by the EFL after breaching FFP rules by making a loss of £48.8m over a three-year period.

The EFL were said to be in talks with the Premier League over a consistent approach to FFP breaches - although the Premier League were said to be reluctant due to how difficult it would be for newly-promoted clubs to avoid relegation with a points deduction.

However, Villa appear to have avoided any sanctions, with CEO Christian Purslow telling the club's supporters trust and disabled supporters association that there was nothing to worry about.

Minutes of the meeting  show Mr Purslow’s response: “Mr Purslow informed the meeting the EFL Finance Department has confirmed that, subject to the final audit of our accounts, Aston Villa’s 2018-19 accounts are compliant with the EFL’s Profitability and Sustainability Regulations.”

It continues a debate that has raged around FFP in recent weeks.

Middlesbrough have reportedly issued a legal letter to Championship rivals Derby County after the Rams controversially sold their stadium to owner Mel Morris.

Morris bought the stadium for £80m, double the value of what Pride Park was listed as in the club's books, which Boro claim is a breach of FFP.
