Aston Villa's Jack Grealish stokes rivalry with Leeds' Kalvin Phillips after England snub

Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish has reacted to his omission from the England squad by liking a tweet that involved Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips received his first international call-up earlier this afternoon, as Gareth Southgate named his 24-man squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against Iceland and Denmark.

However, Grealish didn’t have the same luck, as Southgate again overlooked the Aston Villa man - who is still yet to be capped by his country.

Many expected the 24-year-old to be included in Southgate’s squad after some impressive form for Villa to help them stay in the Premier League for next season.

Phillips, though, was shown a reward for his brilliant form in the Championship for Leeds last season - helping his side run away with the title.

Southgate last year did say that Grealish needed to gain more Premier League experience to earn a call-up to the England squad.

In a tweet from Sky Bet, they referenced that Southgate comment and compared Grealish’s Premier League stats with Phillips, who is yet to make an appearance in the top-flight.

Grealish then liked this tweet from his official Twitter account.

Southgate spoke on Phillips’ call-up and mentioned Leeds’ 'outstanding way of playing' under Marcelo Bielsa.

The England boss said, via England’s official Twitter account : “I think he is a player that we have watched a lot in the last 12 months in particular with Leeds. I think they have had an outstanding way of playing.

“The position he plays is a position where we need competition for places and the way that he plays the role and the way that he has been coached in the role is clear to see.

“It is an exciting moment for him. I spoke to him this morning (Tuesday) which was a nice reminder of what it means to somebody to be in their first England squad.

“It is a proud moment for him, his family and his club."
