Aston Villa offer to host Champions League final as alternative to Istanbul

Aston Villa have offered up Villa Park as an alternative venue to Istanbul for the Champions League final, according to a report.

There has been speculation that the final of UEFA's flagship event could be moved to England to reduce the risk of coronavirus infection with Manchester City and Chelsea reaching the last stage.

Wembley is the obvious candidate as England's national stadium which hosts the FA Cup and Carabao Cup final.

But Sky Sports claim Villa Park has entered the frame as Aston Villa gave the European governing body the option to use their stadium on May 29.

However, UEFA are insistent on using the original location, the Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul.

Concerns have been raised that Turkey is a hotspot for Covid-19 and it would make logistical sense to host the all-English final in Britain.

UEFA hopes to give Man City and Chelsea fans 4,000 tickets each as foreign travel from the UK may be allowed from May 17.

A statement read: "The UEFA Champions League final will take place in Istanbul on May 29 with a limited number of spectators and we are assured the temporary lockdown which is in force until May 17 should not have any impact on the match."

"UEFA continues to work closely with the Turkish Football Federation and the local and national authorities to stage the match safely

"Detailed information regarding the capacity for the match, travel and ticketing details will be communicated publicly by the end of the week.".

Thomas Tuchel's men set up a mouthwatering tie with City as they dispatched Real Madrid 3-1 on aggregate on Wednesday night.
