Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard's comments on Philippe Coutinho after Liverpool exit

Philippe Coutinho looks as if he could finally end his Barcelona nightmare this month with Aston Villa among those keen on the Brazilian.

Ever since he swapped Liverpool for Spain in January 2018 the playmaker has struggled for form.

England's top flight was the platform upon which Coutinho produced his best moments and Premier League clubs are being mentioned as potential destinations.

Villa are among them and have Steven Gerrard at the helm, a former teammate of Coutinho's.

The former Liverpool captain played with the Brazilian in the latter part of his career.

Coutinho's Anfield departure did upset some after he expressed a desire to leave in the summer of 2017.

Liverpool held onto their man for several months before admitting defeat and sold him for a mammoth £142m.

Gerrard though, speaking at the time, never had an issue with the 29-year-old or the manner in which he went about his business.

He said on BT Sport previously: “I'm not surprised by it (Coutinho's move). I know Liverpool have done everything they can to keep him and they fought very hard to keep him until the summer.

“But when a kid's got a dream, a South American, that he wants to play for Barcelona and he thinks this is the only opportunity he's going to get, then it's very difficult to stop it.

“There's no doubt about it, Liverpool will miss him. He's a wonderful footballer, a great person and to be fair to him he hasn't downed tools at all. I respect his decision and wish him all the best.

“But Liverpool will go on. They've got big money for him and I'm sure they'll replace him with the right people.”

Villa have continued to invest since their promotion in 2019 but a deal for Coutinho would be the biggest statement they've made since returning to the top flight.

Emi Buendia was signed in the summer and plays in a similar position to the former Red which could provide something of a selection headache should they pursue a move.

Barcelona are in the midst of a new era having hired Xavi earlier this season.

The club legend is in the midst of shaping his squad and is happy to let Coutinho go, thus getting his wages off the club's books.

Ferran Torres has just returned to Spain for over £50m having left Manchester City.

It is Xavi's first major signing and Barcelona president has warned the footballing world that the Catalans will continue to invest.

He said: "Everybody should get ready, as we are back as big players in the market."
