Aston Villa manager reveals Sir Alex Ferguson Manchester United message following promotion

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith has revealed that he received a congratulatory text message from Sir Alex Ferguson following his side's promotion to the Premier League on Monday.

Villa secured their return to the top-flight of English football this week as they beat Derby 2-1 in the Wembley showpiece event.

Ferguson was one of many figures in football to congratulate Villa on their promotion and Smith revealed how the legendary Manchester United manager has already offered him a glass of wine when he visits Old Trafford next season.

Villa will be looking to make a good impression on their return to the Premier League and Smith insists his side will not be there just to make up the numbers next season.

And when asked which team he wants to face on the first day of next season he couldn't help but dream of taking on United away.

"I've not thought about it too much. But maybe Manchester United away," he told the Villa website.

"I had a nice text of Sir Alex Ferguson on Monday.

"He said I can pop into his office afterwards and enjoy a nice glass of wine with him.

"I'll relish pitting my wits against some of the best coaches in the world.

"It gives me the opportunity to test myself. We're all trying to get better.

"I'm looking forward to the challenges ahead.

"People might laugh at me, but when we come up against the likes of Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, I want to try and win those games. That’s how we will approach it."
