Aston Villa manager Dean Smith receives touchline ban for Newcastle United clash

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith will be banned from the touchline for Saturday's visit of Newcastle to Villa Park.

Smith will accept his FA charge of using insulting language at match officials during Aston Villa's 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in midweek.

The Villa boss was given a yellow card, and then a red, by referee Jon Moss. Smith complained following Bernardo Silva's opening goal after City team-mate Rodri had returned from an offside position to dispossess Tyrone Mings in the build-up to the goal.

The FA charged Smith on Thursday evening and he has since told reporters on Friday morning that he will be accepting the charge, which brings with it a fine and a one-match touchline ban.

"I will reluctantly accept it," Smith said.

"I will accept the charge of insulting the officials. I certainly didn't abuse them and that will be the end of the matter."

Smith was then asked about his controversial 'juggling balls for Christmas' remark which got him cautioned originally, and replied: "I don't really regret it.

"That's just my way of dealing with the situation, a touch of sarcasm and that sarcasm resulted in a yellow card."

It means Smith will be watching the match from the directors' box in the Trinity Road Stand against the Magpies and he will be wired up his assistants John Terry and Craig Shakespeare on the touchline.

FA rules state that Smith may only communicate with those in the dugout by either phone or a runner although he can communicate with the team in the changing room prior to the game and at half-time.

Villa will also be without suspended midfielder John McGinn, as well as the injured Kortney Hause and Wesley Moraes.
