Aston Villa issue key injury update ahead of Manchester United fixture

Aston Villa loan star Ross Barkley could be fit to face Manchester United on New Year's Day.

The England international has been out of action since November 21 due to a hamstring injury sustained in the early stages of the 2-1 defeat to Brighton.

So far, the attacking midfielder has missed five matches - and he will be absent for a sixth game as he is not eligible to play against parent club Chelsea on Monday.

However, Villa boss Dean Smith has hinted that the former Everton man could make his return from injury against United at Old Trafford on Friday.

Speaking after his side's 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Villa Park on Boxing Day, Smith said: "He (Barkley) can't play against Chelsea and it wasn't worth the risk today.

"He's out on the training ground and he doesn't feel it.

"In the gym, he's still not 100 per cent with it, so we decided not to risk it.

"He was very, very close to being involved today (against Palace) but I want to make sure he's totally 100 per cent to play games."

Meanwhile, Villa forward Trezeguet will miss the tip to Chelsea as he continues his recovery from a hamstring problem.

United still have one or two injury issues of their own, with Victor Lindelof forced off during the 2-2 draw at Leicester City on Boxing Day.

Lindelof had to be substituted due to a chronic back issue that the defender has been nursing throughout this season.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed action may need to be taken to replace Lindelof following his latest setback.

"Yeah he's struggling with his back," Solskjaer told BT Sport. "He's struggled for a little while. We might have to do something. Let's see what it is."

Speaking to MUTV, Solskjaer added: "His back again I think, so we'll just have to assess that one before Wolves.

"Then again, Eric (Bailly) is fit now, Axel (Tuanzebe) is fit now, so of course we might have to look at that one again."

United host Wolves on Tuesday (December 29, 8pm), before taking on Villa in their first match of 2021.
