Aston Villa handed major boost in race for £12m Liverpool winger also wanted by Leeds United, Rangers and Middlesbrough

Aston Villa now appear in pole position to sign Ryan Kent from Liverpool.

The Bristol City flop is in high demand this summer after he revitalised his career last season.

Following a disastrous loan spell at the Robins, when they were fined by Liverpool for not playing him enough, he went north of the border to Rangers, where he enjoyed one of the most fruitful spells of his career.

It has led to plenty of interest in him, with Steven Gerrard keen to take him back to Ibrox for another loan.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is said to be keen to take a look at Kent in pre-season, but there is no guarantees he will get game time at Anfield next season.

Leeds United and Middlesbrough have also been linked with loan moves for him.

Yet Birmingham Live report that the former Robin is uninterested in another loan move this summer having been sent out on five moves already.

Instead, his preference is to depart on a permanent basis should he leave Liverpool this summer.

The Reds want around £12m for him, which effectively rules Rangers, Leeds and Middlesbrough out - unless Leeds and Boro raise the money by selling players.

It leaves Villa as the frontrunners for his signature.
