Aston Villa handed boost in Leeds United's Kalvin Phillips transfer hunt - reports

Leeds United fans are still reeling after popular defender Pontus Jansson departed for Brentford last night.

The 26-year-old has left Elland Road after a fee worth £5.5m was agreed with their Championship rivals.

Whites supporters are now hoping to hold onto another player who is in demand with just a month left to go in the transfer window although it might not be easy.

The latest reports from Football Insider suggest that Kalvin Phillips has rejected an opening contract offer from Leeds.

Aston Villa have outlined a move for the 23-year-old, who who established himself as a vital player for Marcelo Bielsa’s team, as they prepare for life back in the Premier League but he won't come cheap.

United are set to stand firm and hold out for a fee of at least £30m for the tough tackling midfielder, more than double what Villa want to pay for him.

Leeds are keen to keep hold of the youngster and have offered him an improved contract but today's reports indicate that the offer is a 'long way off from what he is seeking'.

The midfielder is thought to be after a deal which will make him one of the top earners in the team with interest also building from Premier League sides Wolves and Bournemouth.

The Leeds United academy product is currently under contract until the summer of 2021.
