Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez claims Trent Alexander-Arnold was 'lucky' with Liverpool winner

One Aston Villa player has claimed that Liverpool were “lucky” to win in their match on Saturday.

The Reds came from a goal down to win 2-1 in the Premier League clash at Anfield, their first home league victory since before Christmas.

Ollie Watkins gave the visitors the lead in the first half, shortly before Roberto Firmino had a goal ruled out for offside in the build-up.

Mohamed Salah equalised in the second half, before Trent Alexander-Arnold won the game with a strike in added time.

Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez said Liverpool “got lucky” with the winning goal, and believes his side did not deserve to come away from Merseyside empty handed.

“I don’t think we deserved to lose at the end of this game,” Martinez told AVTV.

“We played really well, we defended as a unit, little bit lucky with the first goal, we had some chances to go ahead in the game again, we didn’t take them.

“I thought the game management was a little bit poor at times. And they got lucky with a good finish at the end.”

Martinez added: “I said to them (his team-mates) after the game that we have to put our heads up because we defended really well.

“Obviously when you concede late in the game, like Newcastle or here... we’ve kept 14 clean sheets and one of the best defensive records in the league, it’s credit to them, to be honest.

“Hopefully we can finish strong.”
