Aston Villa given stark transfer warning over Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke

The ship has sailed for Crystal Palace striker Christian Benteke and a possible return to Aston Villa, according to one former Premier League forward.

The Palace striker has been linked with a return to Aston Villa, where he scored 49 goals in 101 appearances before joining Liverpool in 2015, with Benteke finding his opportunities limited s far this season with the Eagles.

The Belgian has played 16 times for Roy Hodgson's men, but is yet to score a goal, with most of his appearances coming from the bench this season for Palace.

But while Villa have been linked with a move to re-sign the Belgian striker, Stan Collymore has warned his old side against making such a move in January.

Everything you need to know about the January transfer window

"I don't share my fellow fans' optimism," the former Villa striker said , as quoted by the Mirror.

"I always felt the lad [Benteke] didn't have the personality to kick on and fulfil his undoubted potential.

"He's quiet, surly and seems to lack the joy of the sport. Liverpool and Crystal Palace have broken Benteke and, even though he may feel a frisson of excitement at reprising the goals he scored at Villa, you can't just switch it on and off like a tap.

"That ship has sailed - for him and the club."

Meanwhile, Palace boss Roy Hodgson has said that he still sees a role for Benteke at Palace, despite the arrival of Everton striker Cenk Tosun on loan last week.

The Eagles boss said that just because a forward has signed for the club, that doesn't necessarily mean that another striker will leave.
