Aston Villa fan The Duke of Cambridge just went crazy celebrating play-off victory over Derby County

The Duke of Cambridge is a passionate football fan - and that enthusiasm for the beautiful game was on full show on Monday at Wembley Stadium.

Prince William was watching Aston Villa take on Derby County in the Championship play-off final, with a place in the Premier League on the line.

The fixture is known as the richest game in world football - and it certainly attracted a royal crowd.

The member of the most famous family in the world was pictured alongside former Villa striker John Carew in the stands, and celebrated the two Villa goals, scored by Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn, with gusto.

And at the full-time whistle, at the end of seven agonising stoppage-time minutes and Villa leading 2-1, the Prince embraced those around him, including Carew.

The Prince is a keen Villa supporter, often seen attending matches and wearing the club's claret and blue colours.

In 2015, in an interview with Gary Lineker, he explained his allegiance to the Villans. He said: “A long time ago at school I got into football big time.

"I was looking around for clubs.

"All my friends at school were either Man United fans or Chelsea fans and I didn’t want to follow the run-of-the-mill teams.

“I wanted to have a team that was more mid-table that could give me more emotional rollercoaster moments.

“Aston Villa’s always had a great history.

"I have got friends of mine who support Aston Villa and one of the first FA Cup games I went to was Bolton v Aston Villa back in 2000.

"Sadly, Villa went on to lose to Chelsea.

“It was fantastic, I sat with all the fans with my red beanie on, and I was sat with all the Brummie fans and had a great time.

“It was the atmosphere, the camaraderie and I really felt that there was something I could connect with.”
