An Aston Villa fan was ejected from their Premier League game against Brighton after directing homophobic gestures at away fans.
A tweet from Aston Villa Police, part of the Football Force Unit for West Midlands Police, revealed action had been taken to remove a supporter at Villa Park.
They wrote on Twitter : "Saddened to say our first ejection of the day for Homophobic gestures towards away fans, c’mon Villa family you’re better than that!"
Villa launched a late fightback to claim three points from their Premier League clash, with a late Matt Targett goal giving them all three points after Jack Grealish had cancelled out Adam Webster's opener.
After Targett's injury time winner, an Aston Villa fan also tweeted a picture of a rainbow flag, used to represent the LGBTQ community, being set on fire.
Brighton fans have historically been targeting with reference to the town's LGBTQ community.
The incidents come after Aston Villa fans came under fire from their own club after footage emerged of a song about their Zimbabwean midfielder Marvelous Nakamba with references to various racial stereotypes.
Villa said in a statement of the Nakamba chants: "The club wholly condemns the chant and urges other supporters to help us identify those responsible.
"Chants of this nature besmirch the good name of Aston Villa Football Club and our fans. If the perpetrators are identified they will be dealt with in the strongest manner by the club and be reported to the police immediately.
"Our security staff will be vigilant at forthcoming games to ensure that anybody attempting repetition of this chant will be dealt with severely.
"We know we can rely on the assistance of the majority of our fans to eradicate this toxic behaviour immediately."
Footage also emerged of fans singing an anti-German chant ahead of their pre-season friendly against RB Leipzig this summer.
