Aston Villa boss Dean Smith explains Conor Hourihane exit as Swansea City loan confirmed

Swansea City have completed the loan signing of Conor Hourihane from Aston Villa.

The 29-year-old will spend the rest of the season in south Wales as Steve Cooper's men continue their bid to secure promotion into the Premier League.

Hourihane becomes the Swans' second new recruit of the month after goalkeeper Ben Hamer joined on a permanent deal from Championship rivals Huddersfield Town.

Hourihane will wear the number 14 shirt at Swansea.

He is available to be included in the matchday squad for the Swans' FA Cup fourth round clash with Nottingham Forest at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.

And speaking after the midfielder's departure from Villa Park, Dean Smith admitted Hourihane deserved the opportunity to play regularly elsewhere having featured just four times in the Premier League for the Villans this season.

Smith said: “Conor is never happy when he’s not playing and we have respected his desire to go on loan to Swansea to play football games and to help them in their push for promotion.

“It’s a loan until the end of the season which gets him back in the heart of a promotion chase and playing regular football."

Swansea are also hopeful of completing the loan capture of Jordan Morris this week.

The American is expected to join the club on loan from Major League Soccer outfit Seattle Sounders for the remainder of the campaign, with Swansea having the option to make that deal permanent in the summer.

It comes after Viktor Gyokeres, Kasey Palmer and Morgan Gibbs-White were recalled by Brighton, Bristol City and Wolves respectively.

The January transfer window closes at 11pm on Monday, February 1.
