Aston Villa and Newcastle United set to rival Nottingham Forest for Premier League star - report

Aston Villa and Newcastle United are the latest sides to enter the race to sign Premier League striker Glenn Murray .

The Brighton and Hove Albion forward looks set to make a loan move away from the American Express Stadium this month in a deal until the end of the season.

Forest chief Sabri Lamouchi is understood to be keen on the former Crystal Palace and Bournemouth man as they  look to bolster their attacking options  during the January transfer window.

Celtic are also said to be interested.

And according to a report by the Guardian , both Dean Smith and Steve Bruce are poised to make an approach for the 36-year-old with both desperate to add a striker to their ranks before the end of the transfer window.

Villa were dealt a major blow with the news that £22m man Wesley will miss the rest of the season with a serious knee ligament injury.

Meanwhile Newcastle, currently five points from safety, have scored just 20 goals so far this term.

Murray has struggled to secure a regular starting spot with Albion this season, with 10 of his 14 appearances from off the bench.

But his manager, Graham Potter, has expressed his desire to  hang on to the forward,  last week dismissing speculation linking him with a move to the City Ground.

“It’s news to me, I’ve not heard anything and Glenn has been great for us,”  he said of the rumours.

“At the same time, every player wants to be out on the pitch but I have no problem with him.”
