Aston Villa 1-2 Liverpool: Sadio Mane inspires late win for Premier League leaders

Sadio Mane was Liverpool's hero as the Premier League leaders secured a stunning 2-1 comeback victory over Aston Villa.

Trezeguet had given the home side the lead after 22 minutes but after heavy pressure in the second half, Andy Robertson equalised with three minutes remaining to salvage Liverpool's unbeaten record - and Mane struck deep into injury time.

From the off, the Reds looked as if they were lacking something. Inside the first 30 seconds, Anwar El Ghazi perhaps should have done better when she shot at Alisson from close range.

Virgil van Dijk then showed how his abilities go beyond just defending, lumping a pinpoint 50-yard ball to Mohamed Salah and the Egyptian was denied by Tom Heaton from a tight angle.

That save proved pivotal when Villa took the lead. McGinn whipped in a fine delivery and Trezeguet slotted home from 10 yards out. A VAR check for offside showed three players in a Villa shirt offside, but the winger was not one of them.

What happened six minutes later could be a turning point for how VAR is used in the future. Robertson down the left found Mane, who picked out Firmino at the far post and the Brazilian tapped home.

The flag was raised for offside and on the replay, it appeared that Firmino was in line with Mings. But after the VAR calculations, the 28-year-old was, incredibly, found to have been offside by his armpit.

There was more drama to follow when Mane went down in the box under the challenge from Frederic Guilbert. Referee Jon Moss pulled out the yellow card for simulation and VAR showed he was entirely correct to do so.

After the break, the Reds responded by testing Heaton with shots from Wijnaldum and Mane, but were yet to truly test the England international.

The league leaders really turned on the heat as Villa settled back into a deep defensive shape, with Salah heading over from close range and Mane's curling effort from 25 yards just missing the target.

Divock Origi and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were summoned from the bench for Salah and Wijnaldum, and the former had a chance to level only to spurn way wide from a tight angle.

Villa had chances of their own to kill the game off when Hourihane ventured forward down the left and his cross nearly found Wesley, only for van Dijk to clear at the last moment.

Manchester City's late turnaround at the Etihad Stadium meant Liverpool needed to get a goal to protect their lead and with three minutes left, they did. Mane floated a cross to the far post and Robertson ghosted in to head past Heaton - and then Mane struck from a corner with seconds remaining.
