Aston Villa 1-0 Millwall player ratings: David Martin shines as Lions put in spirited display

David Martin

Made an excellent save from Kodjia after Leonard's mistake and then a sharp stop from El Ghazi's free-kick. Make three superb saves in the second-half from Grealish, El Ghazi and Green in the second period before saving the best until last, wonderfully denying El Ghazi when he was clean through, and certainly didn't deserve to be losing side – 9

Mahlon Romeo

Got torn to pieces in the first 45 minutes, although he could have possibly done more to stop El Ghazi's cross which led to the opening goal. Improved in the second-half, although – just like Brentford on Friday – wasted a good shooting opportunity when space opened up for him – 6

Alex Pearce

Another assured showing from the captain. Coped a lot better than Kodjia than Cooper did, but should have perhaps done better with a first-half chance – 6

Jake Cooper

A really difficult afternoon in which he massively struggled against Kodjia's pace. Booked for scything him down midway through the first-half and his reaction was to put Villa in from moments later. Made some important blocks in the second-half to stop the hosts from winning by more – 6

Confirmed Millwall side to face Aston Villa: Neil Harris reveals team for clash at Villa Park

James Meredith

Good performance from the Australian. Defensively solid and provided great support to the attack before he was eventually replaced by O'Brien – 6

Ben Marshall

Wasteful going forward and it took him until the last half-four before he began to give Romeo some help. Shanked a free-kick out for a goal-kick which summed up his day – 5

Ryan Tunnicliffe

Given the almost-impossible task of trying to stop Grealish. Made to look silly once or twice by the Villa captain, but stuck with his task before he was replaced by Morison– 6

Ryan Leonard

A typical Leonard performance. Extremely sloppy with the ball, including one horrendous pass that sold Cooper short, luckily for him, Martin saved well from Kodjia. Got better after the break – 5

Final Championship table predicted final finishing positions for 2018/19 season

Shane Ferguson

Not one of his better days. Crossing was unusually poor and found it tough against Green's pace late in the game when he dropped to left-back – 6

Jed Wallace

With Thompson out injured, he played up alongside Gregory and always looked the most likely Millwall to make something happen. Forced Steer into a fine save from 25-yards and produced some other classy bits of player. Occasionally wasteful in the final-third, but never stopped working – 6

Lee Gregory

Another difficult 90 minutes for Gregory away from home. Fed of scraps and nothing fell his way. Had a decent chance late on, but hooked over – 6

Substitutes

Aiden O'Brien (James Meredith – 64)

Hardly involved at all – 5

Steve Morison (Ben Marshall – 80)

Nothing of note – N/A

Tom Elliott (Mahlon Romeo – 89)

Not enough time to make an impact – N/A
