Aston University appoints new vice-chancellor and chief executive

A prominent academic in Australia who has also held government advisory roles has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor and chief executive of a Birmingham university.

Professor Aleks Subic will join Aston University in August, succeeding Alec Cameron who stepped down after five years in the post in December.

Mr Subic is currently the deputy vice-chancellor of STEM and vice-president of digital innovation at RMIT University in Melbourne where he is responsible for leading the STEM college and digital innovation portfolio in Australia and globally.

Prior to this, he was the deputy vice-chancellor of research and enterprise at Swinburne University of Technology, also in Melbourne.

Alongside his academic work, he has held appointments on the Australian Prime Minister's industry taskforce, the Australian Advanced Manufacturing Council's leaders group and was previously the director of the Australian Association of Aviation and Aerospace Industries.

His other work includes roles with Oceania Cybersecurity Centre, Society of Automotive Engineers Australasia and Urban Research Institute.

He said: "I feel privileged at being given the opportunity to lead Aston University at this time.

"The university is renowned for its commitment to graduate employability, translational research and its engagement with business.

"I am ambitious to see Aston University continue to build on its reputation for high-quality teaching, research and business engagement locally, nationally and internationally."

Pro-chancellor Yve Buckland added: "I am absolutely delighted at Aleks' appointment. He joins the university at an exciting time and his wide experience of leadership across both academia and industry makes him a perfect fit for Aston University's needs and ambitions."

Saskia Loer Hansen will continue in her role as interim vice-chancellor until the summer.
