Asteroid bigger than Edinburgh Castle will hurtle towards earth’s orbit this week warns NASA

An Asteroid bigger than Edinburgh Castle is hurtling toward the Earth, NASA has warned.

The large space rock is called 2008 GO20 and will make a close approach with the planet later this week.

At around 220 metres wide, it is much bigger than Edinburgh Castle which stands at 135 metres, reports the Daily Record.

Luckily it is expected safety pass by Earth’s orbit on Saturday, July 24 at 8:35pm here in Scotland.

The space agency has classified the asteroid as an “Apollo” which is a term used to describe an object that crosses our orbit, much like 1862's Apollo.

It is predicted the asteroid will zoom by Earth at a speed of around 8km a second, equivalent to 17,895mph.

Despite being double the size of Big Ben and three times taller than Tower Bridge, the space rock poses an extremely low risk to the planet due to its unlikelihood of it making contact with the Earth’s surface.

Earlier this month, an asteroid the size of the Eiffel Tower labelled 2021 KT1 came close to Earth.

It approached Earth at a distance of 4.5 million kilometres and was classified as “potentially hazardous” by NASA due to being closer than 4.6 million away.
