Assessing King Vuniyayawa's Leeds Rhinos debut

There were probably a few nervy Leeds Rhinos supporters after King Vuniyayawa's opening minutes in the blue and amber.

The big Fijian, a left-field signing by the Rhinos ahead of the new season, came on at half-time in the club's pre-season defeat to Huddersfield, and it's fair to say he wasn't far away from the action early doors.

But it was for the wrong reasons to start with, giving away a needless penalty as he came in as the fourth man and lifted a player over the horizontal. When Leeds got the ball back two minutes later, he dropped it inside his own half early in the set.

Thankfully, things got better thereafter for Leeds' new forward.

His first stint was short, lasting only 12 or so minutes before being brought off, but he showed some dominance in defence before he was withdrawn as he put a big hit on Luke Yates.

When he returned to the field, he started to have a real impact on the game.

He was brought on with approximately 18 minutes left and won his side a six again with a strong carry.

That was the first of three penalties he won for the Rhinos in a matter of minutes, with Huddersfield guilty of two ball steals on him shortly after. The first ball steal was followed by a Liam Sutcliffe try, and then he gave Leeds territory again with the second. Huddersfield struggled with his powerful carries.

But his most memorable moment of the game came with minutes to spare.

The rampant forward made a superb line break, showing lovely footwork to skip between two defenders and run towards the line.

He looked certain to score, but a miraculous tackle from young Huddersfield fullback Aidan McGowan denied him what appeared to be a near-certain try as he hauled him to the floor. In truth, he'll be disappointed to have not got the try.

That said, it was a promising debut from the forward after a shaky start. His carries packed a punch and caused plenty of problems and while his defence looked slightly raw, his contact in the tackle was strong.
