Assault suspect barricades himself inside flat for two hours in police stand-off

A two hour stand-off developed on a Merseyside housing estate after a wanted man refused to surrender after a woman was attacked.

Armed police surrounded flats on Denecliff, in Stockbridge Village, this morning when the man barricaded himself inside a flat.

Officers were seen carrying firearms and shields as the suspect initially refused to cooperate and barred entry to the property.

A hunt had been underway to find the man after a domestic assault, also in Stockbridge Village, today, in which a woman sustained minor injuries.

Police received a report at 8.30am about an assault at Denecliff inside the flats, and when officers arrived the victim had left, leaving the man inside.

He claimed he had a knife and would harm himself.

A negotiator had to be brought to the armed containment to talk to the man who eventually surrendered and was arrested on suspicion of the domestic assault, and a further assault.

The 31-year-old will now be quizzed about the attacks.

Fire crews were also deployed to the area as part of standard contingency procedures.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said the stand-off started at 10.30am and ended at 12.30pm when the suspect was brought into custody.

And it was added: "Thank you to local residents for their patience while the incident was resolved."

A witness said: "I saw police using special equipment to smash the door in, they had shields and a man with some sort of stick to guard against dogs.

"There was a really large police presence."
