Assault on doctor protesting lack of medical equipment: Case becomes noose for officials in Visakhapatnam

VISAKHAPATNAM: The sensational case of doctor Sudhakar has become a noose for a few officials in Visakhapatnam city following the court allowing investigating agency CBI to file a chargesheet against five officials.

Doctors who treated Sudhakar and referred to the Mental Care Hospital, and police officials, who allegedly misbehaved with the doctor, are now fear gripped.

It is recalled that the Narsipatnam government civil assistant surgeon (Anaesthesia) Dr Sudhakar was allegedly beaten and misbehaved by the cops before being taken into custody on May 16 last year while he was protesting half-naked at Akkayyapalem.

Cops beating the doctor after his hands were tied behind his back with a rope had gone viral in social media. He was treated by the KGH doctors and was shifted to a government hospital for mental care in the city later.

A few days before this incident, the doctor was suspended by the government after he made allegations that there were no masks or personal protective equipment for the doctors in the government hospitals. His comments video had gone viral on social media and he was suspended.

The high court directions are now giving jitters to the doctors and police officials who treated and referred him to the mental hospital, and also the police personnel of the fourth town police station and others, who handled the situation and case also.

It has become a burning topic in the city and people are now debating over the five officials whose names would be included in the chargesheet.

On the direction of the high court, CBI officials registered a case under sections 120B 324, 343, 379, and 506 under IPC based on the statement of doctor Sudhakar recorded by the fifth additional junior civil judge cum fifth additional metropolitan magistrate of Vizag in the last week of May last year. Unfortunately, doctor Sudhakar passed away in the month of May of this year due to illness.
