'Assault' of police officer: Arnab Goswami withdraws anticipatory bail plea

Republic TV's Arnab Goswami today withdrew his anticipatory bail application in connection with a case registered against him for allegedly assaulting a police officer. PTI noted that Goswami's lawyer, Shayam Kalyankar, said said the application was withdrawn "as per Goswami’s instructions".

Goswami was accused of "assaulting" a woman police officer in November when he was arrested by the police from his home in Mumbai in connection with a 2018 case of abetment to suicide. An FIR was filed on November 4, and Goswami was booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code and Damage to Public Property Act. Charges include assault to deter public servant from discharge of duty.

The 2018 case pertains to the deaths of interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud, allegedly by suicide. A suicide note purportedly written by Anvay claimed he had been forced to take his life because of financial problems caused by the non-payment of dues amounting to over Rs 5 crore by Goswami and two others.

The police registered an abetment to suicide case but closed it in 2019. The case was reopened this year. Goswami was remanded to 14 days in judicial custody after his arrest on November 4, but the Supreme Court granted him interim bail on November 11.
