Assault in Bristol Mercure hotel leaves man brain damaged

A man has admitted a serious assault following a violent incident in a hotel in central Bristol.

Daniel Service appeared at Bristol Crown Court on June 21 and pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent. He also admitted dangerous driving, following the incident at the Mercure Bristol Brigstow Hotel.

Police were called to the hotel on Welsh Back by the Floating Harbour at around 10am on January 27 this year.

Guleed Ali, 24, was rushed to hospital after suffering a "life-changing" injury, the court heard.

He remains in hospital in a brain rehabilitation unit and his condition is improving to a small degree, the court was told.

Service, 27 and from Kelston Close in Yate, was one of two people charged in connection with the incident.

Kimberley O’Driscoll, 31, of Horse Street in Chipping Sodbury, has pleaded guilty to assisting an offender in that she drove Service away from the hotel.

Judge Mark Horton remanded Service in custody and bailed O'Driscoll, pending reports, for sentence on a date to be fixed.
