Assault and fight leads police to cordon off St Stephens Street

An assault and fight that happened during the early hours of this morning (March 7) has lead police officers to cordon of a section of St Stephens Street in Bristol city centre.

Bristol Live were alerted to the fact that the street was cordoned off this morning at around 9am.

Now, it's been revealed that part of the street was blocked by officers because of an ongoing assault and then a later attack against an officer who was working at the scene.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: "We were called to St Stephen’s Street in Bristol city centre at about 4.45am today (Sat 7 March) to a report of an ongoing assault.

"Officers attended and found two men with head injuries. Both were taken to hospital for treatment.

"An officer was assaulted while at the scene dealing with this incident.

"A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of GBH and assault on an emergency worker and a 19-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of GBH. They both remain in custody.

"Enquiries are ongoing and CCTV from the area is being reviewed."

It is not thought the two men who were taken to hospital suffered life changing or life threatening injuries. The police officer who was assaulted managed to stay on duty.
