'Assassin's Creed' Rumor Claims New Game Set in America Was Canceled Due to Politics

A new report now claims that there was a supposed game from Ubisoft's "Assassin's Creed" that would have made players go against the notorious Ku Klux Klan, but it was canceled before it even materialized.

This potentially would have been the second "Assassin's Creed" game that is set in America but would be in a later era compared to "Assassin's Creed III," which took place during the American Revolution.

'Assassin's Creed' Canceled Game Rumors

A new report from Stephen Totilo of Game File has shared details about an interesting game that could have been the next "Assassin's Creed" installment, where players would have gone against the infamous group known as the KKK.

This would have been the first time Ubisoft and the franchise would touch on this subject and era of American history after previously focusing on the American Revolution between the British and Native Americans.

In this game, the plot would have focused on what is known as the "Reconstruction Era," which is also known as the post-Civil War era that took place from around 1865 to 1877, following President Abraham Lincoln's death. It is also known that Lincoln is the American president who abolished slavery in the country, giving African Americans equal rights in society.

Totilo and Game File reportedly claimed (via GameRant) that Ubisoft Quebec was involved in the development of this said project, and the game has already entered its pre-production and gained initial approval from the company's leaders.

That being said, it was revealed that the game was still years away from completion, but the development was short-lived.

Ubisoft Reportedly Canceled the Game Due to Politics

This particular "Assassin's Creed" game would have featured the Brotherhood recruiting a formerly enslaved Black man to join their ranks and fight for equality in the South, where racism was still prevalent at the time. The unnamed protagonist would have clashed with the Ku Klux Klan during the start of the Reconstruction era in 1865.

According to the report, it was Ubisoft Paris who decided to shut down this Reconstruction-era "Assassin's Creed" game development in 2024 as they feared further backlash after introducing Yasuke, the Black samurai from "Assassin's Creed Shadows." Moreover, they also had massive concerns about the current "unstable political climate in the United States."

Ubisoft Paris reportedly claimed that the game was "too political" in this day and age, particularly as it would significantly tackle what many may see as controversial topics.
