Assam: Met issues heavy rain, thunder squall warning, advisory

GUWAHATI: The India Meteorological Department has forecast likely heavy isolated rainfall and thunder squall with wind reaching 50 to 60 kmph and hailstorm over Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on April 18 and 19.

According to the IMD alert, isolated heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Assam and Meghalaya for the next five days.

The department stated that the strong wind and hail may damage plantation horticulture and standing crops, may injure people and cattle at open places, and may result in partial damage to vulnerable structures due to strong winds and minor damage to houses, walls and huts.

IMD has issued an advisory asking people to stay indoors, close windows and doors and avoid travel if possible.

“Take safe shelters, do not take shelter under trees, Do not lie on concrete floors and do not lean against concrete walls,” the IMD advisory states.

Moreover, the IMD has asked people to unplug electrical and electronic appliances, to immediately get out of water bodies and keep away from the objects that conduct electricity besides considering suspension of farming operations during the event.
