Assam man trying to defraud biodiversity board held

GUWAHATI: City police arrested a person from Mangaldai for allegedly trying to fraudulently withdraw Rs 25.5 lakh from the bank account of Assam State Biodiversity Board.

He has been identified as Nabajyoti Deka of Mangaldai in Darrang district.

On October 23, Deka had allegedly tried to withdraw the aforesaid amount from the board's bank account by using an "unauthorized payment authority letter" with the seal and signature of one Muzibur Rahman. After getting cognizance of withdrawal of at least Rs 20,000, additional principal chief conservator of forest KSPV Pavan Kumar lodged an FIR at Dispur police station. Later, the bank also froze the bank account.

Kumar said, "The board had neither issued any cheque nor any payment authority letter to anybody. The accused is not an employee of the state biodiversity board. I have faith in the police. They will carry out a proper investigation to find out how he managed to forge the signatures of the board official." Kumar said the withdrawn money has been reversed to the board's bank account. A case has been registered against Deka on charges of forgery and cheating. Police said the accused is currently in police custody and an investigation is under way to unearth further linkages.
