Assam: Integrated draft electoral rolls out, voter count up

GUWAHATI: Assam on Monday published the integrated draft electoral rolls for 126 legislative constituencies with an increase of 1.78% voters after "purification" of the electoral list published on January 18.

As per the electoral rolls published in January, Assam had a total of 2,29,92,505 electors. This has increased to 2,34,02,833 in the integrated draft electoral rolls. The final list will be published on January 5 next year.

Electors will be able to file claims and objections with the authorities concerned regarding the inclusion or exclusion of their names in the electoral roll till November 30. The claims and objections will be disposed of by December 20.

Chief electoral officer (CEO) Nitin Khade told TOI that there is an increase of 4,10,328 in the list after purification. "There are various reasons behind the increase in the electors in the updated list. Covid-19 pandemic is one of the significant reasons. Many people, who have returned to the state from different parts of India after elections, decided not to leave the state again and they have enrolled here. Migrated voters are another reason," he added.

Nagaon district has recorded the highest increase in voters as per the draft roll. A total of 52,847 new names have been enrolled in the fresh draft. Nagaon is followed by Sonitpur district with an increase of 42,693 and Golaghat with 24,395.

Meanwhile, Dhubri has seen a decrease in electors. As per the electoral rolls published in January, the district had 9,91,621 voters. This has decreased by 572. The district has now 9,91,049 electors. The CEO said the decrease is due to omission of double entry of voters' names. "Sometimes, it happens that people may have their names enrolled in two different places. After purification of the list, the exact figure comes out," he added. Kamrup (Metro) district has recorded an increase of 14,945 voters. The figure of 11,37,375 (as per the list published in January) has gone up to 11,52,320 in the fresh draft roll.
