Assam Congress marches to Raj Bhavan, seeks judicial inquiry into phone-tapping

GUWAHATI: The Assam Congress took out a protest march to the Raj Bhavan here on Saturday, on alleged illegal spying through the Pegasus spyware.

In compliance with the call given by the All India Congress Committee to stage nationwide protests, the Assam PCC took out the rally with a call to institute a Supreme Court-monitored judicial inquiry of the alleged scandal. Outgoing Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora said the alleged phone-tapping has even surpassed the Watergate scandal and accused the Modi government of infringing upon the privacy of the people illegally.

“The Pegasus spyware has been sold to governments, not to private companies. It has been procured from the Israeli company by 48 countries and India is one of them. It's clear that the Modi government is behind the scandal in India,” Bora said.

He alleged that instead of using the spyware to tackle external threats and terrorist activities, it was used to steal information from opposition leaders. “This is dangerous for a democracy,” said Bora.

The Congress demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah.

Leader of the opposition, Debabrata Saikia, accused the government of tightening the noose on civilians in a free country.
