Assam Congress backs Rahul Gandhi as next AICC president

Guwahati: Assam Congress has backed Rahul Gandhi as the next All India Congress Committee (AICC) president even as the party is going ahead with elections to choose its office bearers.

After Saturday's CWC meeting, sources said the grand old party may get a full-time president by September next year. Assam PCC president Bhupen Borah told TOI that Assam PCC will fully back Rahul's elevation to the top post. “Rahul Gandhi should now take the responsibility and start touring the length and breadth of the country,” Borah said on Saturday.

He added that youths in particular desperately want Rahul Gandhi to lead the party from the front ahead of the crucial 2024 Lok Sabha election.

AICC general secretary and Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh, a close aide of Rahul Gandhi, told TOI that organizational elections, announced by the Congress, are a part of the democratic process.

In a news conference at Assam Congress headquarters here on Saturday, Rajya Sabha MP and former Assam PCC president Ripun Bora vehemently opposed the recently revised area of operation of the BSF in the international border areas of Assam from 15 km to 50 kms. He alleged that the decision has been unilaterally imposed by the Centre on the state government. “This unilateral decision is affecting the federal structure of the Constitution, while usurping the Constitutional prerogative of the state governments,” Bora said.
