Assam: Cadres of Dimasa outfit to surrender arms today

SILCHAR: As part of a unilateral ceasefire agreement between the militant Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA) and the Assam government, cadres of the proscribed group will surrender arms at a programme in Maibang sub-division in Dima Hasao district on Saturday.

According to sources, a pact was signed in the presence of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma between the DNLA and state government last month according to which the former will lay down their arms and join the mainstream. The programme, in which the militant outfit's cadres will surrender their arms, will be held on a playground at Khepre in Maibang on Saturday.

A ministrer and additional director general of police (special branch) Hiren Nath are likely to be present at the event.

Superintendent of police (Dima Hasao) Jayant Singh said the DNLA had signed an agreement with the state government as part of which they would surrender their arms officially on Saturday.

Asked about the number of DNLA cadres (who will be surrendering their arms on Saturday), he said it will be known on Saturday.
