Assam: Bomb found in Cachar, 2nd in a month

SILCHAR: An IED was found in the Lakhipur area of Cachar district along National Highway-37, which connects Silchar with Imphal, on Tuesday night.

A senior police official on Wednesday said locals saw a polythene packet with a "suspicious-looking" item in it under a culvert at Jujam in Lakhipur sub-division on Tuesday night after which the matter was informed to the police. A police team, led by superintendent of police (Cachar) Ramandeep Kaur, rushed to the spot and detected the bomb with the help of metal detectors. A bomb squad from Silchar later defused the IED, he added.

The police official said the matter was being investigated to nab the culprits involved in the incident and to decipher the intention behind the activity.

It was the second bomb found in Cachar district this month. A crude bomb was found in the Khulicherra area of Hailakandi district near the Assam-Mizoram border on November 6. The explosive was neutralised later at a place along the inter-state border.
