Assad Rival Complains of Lack of Support to His Electoral Campaign

Syrian presidential candidate Mahmoud Marei, of the opposition Syrian Democratic Front, acknowledged on Sunday the modest means of his campaign, saying he has not received any funding from countries or agencies.

In remarks to the German press agency (dpa), he said that his campaign is “very modest” because he has not received any funding from any state or authority.

All the support he received came from internal national opposition parties and some friends, he added.

Marei revealed that his campaign is focusing on Damascus and its countryside, in addition to several provinces.

The campaign is being led by a media team from the Syrian Democratic Front that supported his run for president.

Furthermore, he criticized the largest local opposition coalition, the National Coordination Committee, for boycotting the elections.

Meanwhile, pro-Assad marches and celebratory events continued in many Syrian cities and villages under the control of the regime.

The elections are set for May 26 with Assad running against two other candidates.
