Assad Advisor: Syrian Presidential Elections Defied the West

Syrian special presidential advisor, Bouthaina Shaaban described holding last week’s presidential elections as scheduled as a “challenge to the will of the western states.”

A number of western countries declared that the elections were “not fair or free” and that they would not recognize the results. Regime ally, Moscow supported the polls and Bashar Assad's victory.

In an interview with the Syria TV channel, Shaaban said Assad's victory speech “answered the people’s messages”, warning against western “attempts to stoke sedition” between the Syrian people and their leadership.

She asserted that the people challenged all the western regimes that tried to prevent them from participating in the polls and went out to the streets declaring they are “the ones who determine and decide.”

She asserted that the results defied all attempts to subjugate Syrians, who have persevered against coercive unilateral measures and confronted the economic blockade throughout the war on their country.

For the past year, many sides have claimed that the elections were legally baseless and a violation of the constitution and United Nations Security Council resolution 2254, said Shabaan.

She added that that the leadership’s decision to hold the constitutional elections on time, is in itself a major act of defiance to the West, which thought it could twist the arm of the government.

The people are challenging all attempts by the West to dissuade them, she stressed.

“The steadfastness of the president was essential to the steadfastness of the country because he leads the country.”

She added that the situation in Syria is the beginning of real awareness and distinguishing between those who want the best for the country and those who are targeting it.
