Asprilla, Ketsbaia, and the unexpected Lord's cameos Newcastle United fans will love

Newcastle United cult heroes Tino Asprilla and Temuri Ketsbaia enjoyed unlikely shout-outs during England's latest test match at Lord's.

Cricket fans may have been stumped on Sunday by Mark Wood's calls on the final day of the drawn encounter with New Zealand.

But the Ashington-born fast bowler's reference to two Magpies' fan favourites' was immediately picked up on social media.

It was during the second innings that Wood shouted 'Asprilla' as he kicked the ball towards the stumps in an attempt to run-out Ross Taylor.

The bowler matched the accuracy of the Colombian international who netted nine times in 48 appearances for United, but was unsuccessful as Taylor successfully scrambled to safety.

Wood was later caught on the stump mic again calling out the name of a Newcastle hero, this time shouting Ketsbaia with Henry Nicholls in little danger of being run out.

The former Georgian international made the move to St James' Park in 1997, and is perhaps best known during his time in black-and-white for his infamous celebration after scoring the winner against Bolton a year later.

Wood's references will have undoubtedly delighted Newcastle fans on social media, and the bowler has previously confirmed he comes from a family of United supporters.

However, the 31-year-old himself is an AFC Wimbledon fan.
