Women praise ASOS for showing model's cochlear implant in earrings advertisement

ASOS is well known for hiring models that represent the everyday person.

The retailer was previously applauded for refusing to Photoshop stretch marks out of their photographs.

And now, the online store is being praised for their latest earrings advert.

One woman took to Twitter to congratulate the fashion line for featuring a model's cochlear implant in an advertisement for earrings.

Model Natasha Ghouri, who was born deaf, was featured wearing ASOS's £5 earrings with a mushroom charm and people on social media noticed her cochlear implant, which turns sound into electric signals.

Asia Smith, 22, went viral on Twitter after sharing how spotting the model on the website made her feel.

She wrote: "Definitely not crying because of ASOS using an earring model with a hearing aid.

"It's the first time I've ever seen a model with a hearing impairment, let alone an earring model. It's so refreshing to see this kind of representation for people like me."

Natasha, from London, responded to the viral tweet, saying: "That's me! Also just for confusion - this is a cochlear implant which is more advanced than hearing aids.

"I'm also modelling their clothes etc! So not just doing earrings which is the biggest achievement I've done! Proving out there that no matter what disability you've got.. you can do it."

Another woman responded: "I’m currently really hard of hearing, I’m sure I’m going to need a hearing aid soon, I was so nervous, but this has honestly made me tear up and made me realise it is completely normal!"

Natasha added: "YESSS GIRL!!! We have superpowers, it makes us special and unique in the [most] powerful ways."

Another added: "Really wish 10 year old me could have seen this! I thought my Hearing Aids were pretty cool until classmates told me they weren’t. Representation is SO important!"

ASOS has been contacted for comment.
