Aslan turned down All-Ireland half-time gig due to fears of jinxing Dubs

Aslan turned down an invitation to play at this year’s All-Ireland football final – because they were terrified they would jinx Dublin.

Frontman Christy Dignam and his bandmates are all avid fans of the Boys in Blue, who were bidding for an historic fifth Sam Maguire in a row.

The 59-year-old revealed they were unanimous in their decision after being asked to provide the half-time entertainment at a sold-out Croke Park.

He added: “We played a couple of times on the pitch at half-time and every time we’ve done it, they haven’t won.

“So we were offered to play on the pitch this year and we wouldn’t do it. We said, ‘No, if we do it, they won’t win’.”

In end they had no worries on that score as the Dubs sealed a famous five by beating Kerry 1-18 to 0-15 in the replay.

And, despite not appearing with Aslan, Christy was in the stadium as a fan for the first encounter which ended in a draw.

The musician, who back in 2016 gave a motivational talk to the Dubs, had to leave during the tense second half as he was concerned about his heart rate.

In an interview with Virgin Media’s The Six O’Clock Show, the dad of one added: “At the first game, halfway through the second half my mouth was going dry.

“I’ve a defibrillator and my heart was pumping. I thought, ‘This isn’t good’. I flew home because I was terrified we were going to lose the match.”

Meanwhile, Christy has reason to celebrate after his autobiography My Crazy World was confirmed as the number one bestseller.

The grandfather of three, who was diagnosed with incurable blood cancer six years ago, said kicking heroin and spending quality time with his family has been the best medicine he could have wished for.

He added: “It’s great Aslan are still doing it and the band are playing at a level they’ve never been at before.

“In a way being diagnosed was the best thing that ever happened to me because it refocused me and made me concentrate on my family and the important things in life.”
