Aslan star Christy Dignam slams planned coalition between Fianna Fail and Fine Gael as 'slap in the face'

Christy Dignam said the planned coalition between Fianna Fail and Fine Gael is a slap in the face to those who voted for change.

The Crazy World hitmaker, who lost his dad to Covid 19 last month, said while he commends the Government’s handling of the pandemic, he feels they “totally f****d up” in nursing homes.

Meanwhile, opening up about living with an incurable cancer and unable to seek treatment during the health crisis, the Aslan star, 60, told Dublin Live: “It was terrifying.”

He added: “I was at home and I was terrified. I don’t know what was happening, this could have been ravishing me and I didn’t know.

“I think one thing Covid has taught us, from the Government’s perspective is, we can’t keep going the way we have been now.

“There has to be an investment put into health.”

A Programme for Government is to be voted on by Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and the Greens this week despite Sinn Fein winning the popular vote in the election.

But the Dublin-born singer, who voted for Sinn Fein, urged leaders to respect the demand for change.

He said: “The whole country made a stance and said ‘listen we’ve had these Governments of Fianna Fail and Fine Gael since the state began and we are sick of it.

“We need a f*****g change, we need something different and we demand something different.

“And that’s what people did, they went out and voted Sinn Fein and that’s why I voted Sinn Fein.

“So now, them forming a Government of the two parties that people rejected, you know it’s like a slap in the face.

“And it’s like, what was the point of us having a general election.”

Christy, who announced the release of Aslan’s new single Hold On, added: “We did fairly well, it was an unprecedented situation and I think they did well bar the nursing homes.”
