Aslan singer Christy Dignam shares heartbreaking 'false alarm' news after cancer cure find

Aslan frontman Christy Dignam has spoken about the devastating moment he found out that the cure for the cancer which he has fought for six years was actually a "false alarm".

The 59-year-old was originally given just six months to live in 2013 when he was diagnosed with a rare and incurable form of the disease, named amyloidosis.

But just last month, he announced on national radio that a new gene-blocking treatment that could reverse and stop the condition had been discovered but sadly it has turned out that it doesn't apply to him.

Speaking to the Irish Daily Star, the Ballymun singer said "that was actually a false alarm".

"Just while I was waiting to do the radio show, I got this email from Dr Gillmore [saying] that they found a cure.

"So I said it to Ray D'Arcy and he said it over the air and then it took legs.

"That was great and I was buzzin'. I went into Beaumont and I go in and I say to my oncologist, will I be going on this new drug Patisiran? And he says no."

The singer explained that there is different types of amyloidosis and 60% of those affected have the same one as him which is called AL amyloidosis.

He continued: "The other 40%, there's another three or four types. One of them is called hATTR amyloidosis and that's the one Martin McGuinness died of.

"That's the genetic one. There's a cluster of people in Donegal that have this condition. It was passed down through generations. That's the one they have found a cure for and it has absolutely no bearing on the one I have."

"I went in on Monday to Beaumont doing cartwheels and I came out on my hands and knees because I was that disappointed."

The band will play Hugh Lynch's in Tullamore as part of the Canal Quarter Festival on August 16th.
