Louise O’Neil tackles a very difficult subject in her brand new book – rape. Following on from the brilliant Only Ever Yours, she tackles a highly controversial subject that is prevalent in the news at the moment.
She looks at the effects this has on the girl who was raped, her friends, her family, the rapists and the community around her. Emma goes to a party, has a few drinks and takes some drugs while under pressure from the boy she fancies. She has no memory of the night, but then finds a Facebook page filled with photos of her in compromising positions.
In the book O’Neil tackles the emotional and mental effects this has on Emma when she files for rape and the case becomes national news. It looks into how the community sees the boys who are accused as good–natured and kind members of the town and claims that they could not have been a part of this. It goes through a few days of Emma’s life before and after the event to show the difference one event can have on your whole life. O’Neil’s book is beautifully written and doesn’t hide away from the harsh truth that accompanies these events.
